Writing and Creativity
Are you a talented writer, but can’t get yourself to write, or publish?
Are you an accomplished writer, dealing with creative issues or emotional issues in your life?
I can help you.
Before becoming a full-time clinician (and for a time afterward), I was a professional writer and editor. I’ve written for the Washington Post, the Denver Post, Utne Reader, Tikkun magazine, Psychotherapy Networker; have been both staff and freelance writer and editor for trade and technical magazines; and have co-authored a self-help book, I Know I’m in There Somewhere: A Woman’s Guide to Finding Her Inner Voice and Living A Life of Authenticity, published by Gotham Books, a division of the Putnam (USA) Group, in 2003, taking it from the concept stage to the after-publication promotion.
When it comes to the writing life, I’ve experienced it all: the loneliness, the distractibility (“Wow! This would be a great moment to walk down to Starbucks/read that blog/vacuum the living room”), the rejection fear, the feeling that everything you write stinks, the self-marketing paralysis, the uncaring editors and marketing departments from hell, the book promotion blues……the list goes on and on.
And of course, I’ve also experienced that burning, passionate desire to write, that need to say something and have people read it, the elation over a thought well expressed in words on a page or a screen that makes writers different from everyone else, that makes writers slightly, well, crazy, especially when compared to their more stalwart and practical family members and friends.
Writing and Creativity
If you’re a writer who hasn’t gotten off the ground yet, I can help you:
1. assess whether you really have what it takes to make it as a writer
2. determine what kind of writing career best fits your abilities, interests and lifestyle
3. establish your own regimen for reaching your goals as a writer, and
4. work through whatever issues are getting in the way of you becoming the writer you are capable of being
Through it all, I will support and encourage you every step of the way.
If you already are an accomplished writer, my other clinical skills are perfectly suited to helping you deal with creative blocks, other emotional issues in your life, and the perils of having a creative personality. After all, as Anne Lamott has said numerous times, “C’mon…you’re a writer. How normal can you be?”
